A few years ago, Obama decided the best option to force Republicans to accept his ideas and move forward on legislative efforts was to go straight to the American People. This campaign style tactics had limited success, but I think it is the only option. Our Legislative Branch is changing as the political world becomes ever more polarized and we purge our political system of leveraging tools like earmarks. Meanwhile, they seem thoroughly deadened to the consequences of their actions and inactions. The only thing our elected officials are afraid only is the loss of their status and power, so they need to know they are risking their next election. Consequently, the American People need to contact their US Congressmen and their Senators to ensure they will end the government shutdown and get and get something done. My suggestion is that GOP accepts a clean Continuing Resolution with the stipulation that the President and Democrats agree to negotiate issues like the Budget and the Tax Code through a give-and-take process. Flood Congressional offices with calls, emails, and visits, even if they are not fully staffed or opened. In fact, contact their campaign staff. Flood the newspapers. Flood the news stations. Flood the web. Don't stop until our political leaders understand it is unacceptable for government to shutdown. They are watching what's trending on twitter and facebook, as well as every other multimedia source.
